Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/16/2010
"The Fabulous Fat Man" is what hockey writers of the day dubbed Toronto goaltender Walter "Turk" Broda, with this fabulous find picturing the popular netminder grinning widely, even before he won the first of five Stanley Cups with the Leafs! Considered by many as the best money goalie in hockey history, Turk was one of Conn Smythe’s finest acquisitions when the Maple Leafs’ boss purchased Broda from the Detroit organization back in 1936. This card #108 from O-Pee-Chee’s sepia-toned 1940-41 set has been graded EX 5 by PSA, with the company only having ever graded one other similar Broda issue higher at EX-MT 6. To evidence the scarcity of high grade examples, they are the only two Broda’s on the PSA Population Report.
