Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/16/2010
The man who broke Syd Howe’s record in 1947 for most career points (regular season and playoffs combined), Bill Cowley stars in this PSA-encapsulated lot, card #98 of O-Pee-Chee’s 1939-40 set coming in at a rather lofty EX+ 5.5. Anything above PSA 5 is rather scarce in the ’39-40 OPCs, with, as of press time, a total of only 230 PSA-graded cards (all players combined) attaining EX+ 5.5-or-better status. There have only been three other Cowley examples to have been graded higher by PSA. The NHL’s Hart Trophy winner as MVP in 1940-41 when he won the scoring championship and helped the Bruins to their second Stanley Cup title in three years, Cowley was known for his passing expertise and joins a host of other Boston players from his era in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
