Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/16/2010
Early-20th century star Jimmy Gardiner stars in this lot, card #36 in the special 45-card set of Sweet Caporal postcards, the dream and the envy of all serious pre-war collectors. Born in Montreal, Gardiner was a member of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association team which claimed the Stanley Cup in March of 1902, with the so-called "Little Men of Iron" also beating the Winnipeg Vics in February of 1903 to retain Lord Stanley’s silverware. A leftwinger, Gardiner then played for Calumet and Pittsburgh of the IHL, before joining his hometown Wanderers and winning the Cup in 1908-09 and ’09-10. Riveting look on Jimmy’s face here adds mystique to the crease-free card, with some peripheral scrapes/scratches resulting in a VG 3 grade from PSA. One of only two Gardiner Sweet Caps ever to have been submitted to PSA for grading.
