Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010

One of the keys to the outlandishly desirable Sweet Caporal postcard set of 1910-11 is that of early hockey superstar Fred "Cyclone" Taylor, the object of several bidding wars as professional hockey was fledging. Before being lured to Renfrew by the big bucks, Cyclone had skated for Portage Lakes, Ottawa and Pittsburgh. Following two seasons with the "Millionaires" in Renfrew, Taylor performed scoring feats with Vancouver of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association, winning the scoring title on five occasions, all after the age of 30. When the sod was turned for the Hockey Hall of Fame building in 1960, it was Taylor who was asked to do it! With all this in mind, it sure is thought-provoking to gander at the look on Cyclone’s face here, the image overshadowing the scraped portion of the postcard which renders it FR 1.5 in the eyes of PSA. There have only ever been two other Taylor Sweet Caps graded by PSA, a fine indicator of the rarity of these magnificent treasures.
