Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/16/2010
From 1946 to 1977, Clarence Campbell served as the NHL's president. The Saskatchewan lawyer, a former league referee and war trial prosecutor, saw the league triple in size from six teams to 18 while holding off a spirited challenge to the league's share of the North American marked by the rival World Hockey Association throughout the 1970s at the end of his 31-year reign. Campbell signed, "To 'Mac', With My Best Wishes, C.S. Campbell," this remarkable original portrait by artist Carleton "Mac" McDiarmid, which was painted on 151/2" x 13" professional illustration board. Mounted in grey matte, the portrait is beautifully presented in a 20" x 16" silver-colored metal frame. Elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame as a builder in 1966, Campbell died on June 24, 1984.
