Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/16/2010
The man behind the origins of the Stanley Cup is celebrated in this splendid framed montage featuring a vintage original photograph of Lord Stanley of Preston. Also displayed are signed pieces featuring nice, clean autographs from the former Canadian Governor General and his sons, William and Arthur, both hockey pioneers in their own right. Rare studio photograph of the Earl of Derby, Frederick Arthur Stanley, is wonderfully displayed in a 24 1/4" x 30" black frame. This original photo dating from the dawn of the 20th Century measures approximately 9" x 7" and remains applied to a sturdy cardboard matte measuring just over 14" x 10". A facsimile "Derby" signature appears beneath the Russell & Sons photograph, as well as "The Right Honorable The Earl of Derby, O.C.B." Lord Stanley has signed "Fred Stanley" - the most difficult version of his autograph to obtain - on a handwritten 1904 letter on "Witherslack Hall, Grange-over-Sands, Lancashire" letterhead. Arthur Stanley, who actually helped form the O.H.A. in 1890, wrote a letter on both sides of a one-page "House of Commons Library" letterhead before applying a big flowing signature, while "Wm Stanley - Ottawa" was penned by William on the back of an O.A.A.C. (Ottawa Amateur Athletic Club) Bazaar ticket. These pieces belong in every hockey historian's collection.
