Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/16/2010
A tempting rarity in the hobby is a Black Hawks Stanley Cup ring, with this one having been made into a ring decades ago with the help of a Stanley Cup championship pendant. "Balfour 10K," which is partially hidden, appears on the lower back of the pendant, while the ring is stamped "14K" on the inner band. Ring size is 9, with the 10 diamonds circling the Indian head logo on front measuring about 2.2 mm each for an approximate weight of .40ctw. Thought-provoking ring weighs approximately 18 grams and recalls how the Hawks excited Chicago hockey fans into hysterics with playoff victories over the five-time defending champion Canadiens and then the Red Wings. Two of the greatest athletes in Chicago sports history, Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita, made their first appearances in the Stanley Cup finals and each contributed to Chicago's ultimate victory. Hull shone in game one with a pair of goals including the game-winner in a 3-2 win, while a Mikita goal was the winner in game five. The Black Hawks then clinched their first Stanley Cup since 1938 with a 5-1 win in Detroit in game six. Obtained by the mother of our consignee who lived in Chicago in the early-1970s, the ring was already created at that time. The pendant charm was an original team-issued Stanley Cup award but we cannot determine who would have received it. Sensational offering has survived in excellent condition and close to 50 years later, the Hawks are finally once again CHAMPIONS!
