Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010

Hall of Famers Phil Esposito and Johnny Bucyk are among the 18 members of the 1974-75 Boston Bruins who have signed Walt McKechnie's game-used stick from Don Cherry's first season as an NHL coach. Grapes, who has also signed the shaft of McKechnie's Northland gamer, guided the Bruins to a 40-26-14 mark and second place in the Adams behind Buffalo, the only time in five seasons behind the bench in Boston that he failed to win a division title. A coat of varnish was applied over the black marker signatures on the front of the shaft, which was bared to make place for the autographs. Cherry, Hynes, Sims, Schmautz, Brooks, Smith, Vadnais, Sheppard, Bucyk, McKechnie, Edestrand, Forbes, O'Reilly, Marcotte, Savard, Doak, Gilbert and Esposito have signed in order from top to bottom, while the Orr signature at the bottom of the shaft is not consistent with Bobby's autograph. "McKechnie" is stamped on the front of the shaft and "18" is stamped in red below Walt's well-worn white tape knob/handle. Part of McKechnie's white tape job is missing from the blade, which has a crack along the bottom edge where it is also missing a five-inch strip.
