Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010

Mark Messier's signatures on this superb pair of his game-used Louisville gloves date them from 1993. The Hall of Famer already had five Stanley Cups to his credit as a member of the Edmonton Oilers' dynasty when he donned these red-white-and-blue Louisville TPS gloves after moving to Manhattan in the early 1990s. More importantly to the New York Rangers' faithful, Messier had another Stanley Cup in his immediate future, this one claimed for the Blueshirts in the spring of 1994. The image of Mark hoisting the Cup and shaking it above his head - something that no Rangers player had done in 54 years - is one that New York hockey fans will never forget. As for his all-leather Louisville gloves offered here, we can tell you that they show great game use with darkened palms and a wear hole and the beginnings of another on the right palm. Numerous black slash marks, scrapes and paint transfer tell the tale of more on-ice action. Each glove is signed and dated "'93" by Mark along one of the red rolls on the front of each glove. This pair of signed Mark Messier New York Rangers gloves comes in a 16"-tall clear plastic case with a wood lid on its 8" x 13" opening at the top. A letter of authenticity from Spivack and Kraut accompanies this lot and states that the gloves were "worn in a Stanley Cup season" and originally obtained at a Rangers charity auction.
