Hall of Famers Conn Smythe, Ace Bailey, Hap Day and Joe Primeau are featured in this vintage and original panoramic studio team photo of an early edition of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Smythe coached the 1928-29 Maple Leafs to a 21-18-5 mark, good enough for a third-place finish in the Canadian Division and a berth in the NHL playoffs. After beating Detroit in a two-game, total-goal playoff opener, the Leafs dropped a pair of one-goal games to lose their semi-final against the defending Stanley Cup champion New York Rangers. The heading "Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club 1928-29" is printed in white letters above Art Duncan, who retired early in the 1930-31 season to become the Leafs' head coach, only to be replaced at the outset of the following season by Dick Irvin. Andy Blair and goalie Lorne Chabot are also pictured in this outdoor shot along with George "Shorty" Horne, Alex Gray, Jack Arbour, Art Smith, Danny Cox, Gerry Lowrey and backup goalie Benny Grant. The Leafs are posed in full uniform, including skates, on carpets placed across the concrete in this outdoor shot of the team's members arranged in an arching single row. A crease that begins just above Bailey's elbow and runs down through his glove to just above his skates and another vertical crease along the inside of Smith's right arm and outside of his leg are the only significant flaws noted along with a small diagonal crease from the carpet to the bottom edge to the left of Smith's right skate. "R 3373 Panoramic Camera Co., 251 Victoria St., Toronto, Ont." is printed in white letters in the bottom right corner. This 5 1/2" x 31" panoramic photo is displayed within a light brown matte and mounted in an 8 3/4" x 34 1/4" wood frame.
