Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/16/2010
Absolutely stunning bronze sculpture of hockey icon Maurice "Rocket" Richard is number 7 of an extremely limited edition of 9 such "Never Give Up" statues produced in 1999. Maurice Richard signed in blue ink on the accompanying certificate of authenticity, which is dated December 1999, mere months before he succumbed to cancer. The Rocket's #9 appears in his facsimile signature etched in the foreground of the diamond-shaped base of bronze-on-marble, which measures 16" x 7" at its maximum length and width. The bronze-finished statue of Richard with the puck cradled on the blade of his stick in full flight in his #9 Montreal Canadiens uniform stands 8" tall and the trophy itself measures approximately 9 1/2" in height overall. The signatures and initials of sculptors Anick Bourgeau and Jules Lasalle appear on the bronze base, between Richard's skates, along with the notation "VII/IX 1999" signifying that the statue is number 7 of 9 produced, as stated in Richard's signed COA. This exquisite piece is one that can be displayed at various angles, all offering a superb image of the incomparable Rocket.
