Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010

Rarely seen photo is this framed original Rice Studios print of the 1938-39 Montreal Canadiens featuring Babe Siebert and Toe Blake on either end of the front row. Siebert, whose name is misspelled "Seibert" on the bottom of the beige matte surrounding this 11 1/2" x 20" Rice photo, is first on the left in as he posed in what would prove to be the last season of his Hall of Fame career. Named head coach of the Canadiens following the season, Siebert tragically drowned in the summer of 1939 before he was able to take over behind the bench. Pictured on the far right, Blake led the NHL with 47 points and claimed the Hart Trophy as league MVP. Haynes, Ward, Gagnon, Cude, Buswell, Wentworth, Mondou, Cain, Mantha and coach Cecil Hart are among the other members of the team pictured. This rare Canadiens team photo exhibits tiny stain spots on the foreheads of Siebert and Blake with more visible along the white foreground. A close look at the surface of the print reveals horizontal lines - the result of aging on this glossy print - which are not discernible when viewed normally. With a heading that reads "Saison 1938-1939, Club 'Canadiens'" written along the top of the matte and team members' names listed along the bottom, this unique Habs team photo displayed in a 17" x 25 1/8" brown wood frame is a great piece of hockey history.
