Georges Vezina, the Chicoutimi Cucumber as he was known, was the only goaltender to play for the Canadiens between 1910 and 1925, helping the team win the Stanley Cup in 1916 and 1924. He was discovered in Chicoutimi, Quebec during an exhibition game between the Montreal Nationals of the Canadian Amateur Hockey League and the local Chicoutimi team during the 1904-05 season. He led his team to 115 wins. The opposing goalie, Joseph Cattarinich, was impressed with his play. When Cattarinich retired from the Montreal Canadiens in 1910, he suggested Vezina as his replacement. This stunning vintage cabinet photograph from 1908 pictures the young Vezina, along with his older brother Pierre and his Chicoutimi Hockey Club teammates. The photo, from Eud Lemay Studios of Chicoutimi, measures 7.5 x 9.5 inches, is mounted to a cardstock backing and has been well-preserved with only a slight touch of staining at the top right corner which does not affect any of the oval images. A wonderful, early memento from one of the original twelve Hockey Hall of Fame inductees.
