Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/16/2010
Hockey broadcast intermissions throughout the 1970s featured the entertaining Showdown competition. Showdown began as a penalty shot tournament with NHL stars vying for cash prizes and bragging rights. Year-to-year variations such as skills contests, obstacle courses, and modified mini-games followed. Rogatien Vachon fared quite well in Showdown as evidenced by this lot of four items from his personal collection, including an award presented to "Team Vachon". The Showdown logo is engraved on the front of this 10"-tall, two-handled silver-plated brass cup along with "1978/79 Team Champions, Team Vachon," and the names of Vachon, Mike Palmateer, Barry Beck, Peter Mahovlich and Steve Shutt. Rogie has signed in black marker below the "Showdown Confrontation" crest sewn on the front of the white mesh #30 jersey he wore - likely during that season's version of the competition - with no tagging in the neck which featured blue vinyl numbers heat pressed onto the back and individual surname letters pressed onto a white nameplate sewn onto the back. Rogie's blue mesh Showdown jersey with white-and-red double twill numbers and individual surname letters sewn directly onto the back is the one he wore during the 1978 edition of the competition. The L.A. Kings goalie's "Fat Cats" won a 3-on-3 competition vs. Philadelphia goalie Wayne Stephenson's "Sweathogs" to claim the $10,000 prize. "Raven's Knit Adult L" and "100% Nylon" fly tags remain in the neck and Rogie has signed above the "Showdown" crest sewn on the front which retains the red velvet on the left side but has lost some of the blue velvet on the right side. Rogie has also signed above the crest on the left breast of his blue-white-and-red size medium Showdown jacket. Rogatien Vachon's signed LOA accompanies this unique Showdown lot.
