Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/22/2010
In 1981 Ivan Hlinka and defenseman Jiri Bubla became the first Czech hockey players in a very long time to get the blessing of the communist regime to play in the NHL. The 1981-82 season became the most successful in the history of the Vancouver Canucks and for the first time, the team made it to the Stanley Cup finals. Hlinka, who according to rules of the time was still considered a rookie, drew attention by earning 23 goals and 60 points. This scarce style, worn by Hlinka circa 1981 to 1983 when he returned to his homeland, is a black mesh Sandow with the maker's double neck tagging intact. The rubberized orange and yellow v-design comes down from the shoulders with the Canucks skate logo at each shoulder and rubber paint number "21" at each cuff. The back displays a short mesh cuff holding tackle twill letters forming "Hlinka" and a heavy fight strap appears in the tail. Nice wear throughout with loads of stick marks and three stitched team repairs. A perfect example of this hard-to-find style. From the collection of Ivan Hlinka with a letter of provenance from the family.
