Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/22/2010
Commemorating a remarkable trek to the pinnacle of the amateur hockey world is this tantalizing gold ring, produced in 1958 after the Whitby Dunlops, led by team captain Harry Sinden and playing-coach Sid Smith, captured the World Ice Hockey Championship in Oslo, Norway. The senior team, originally formed in Oshawa by manager Wren Blair in 1953-54, later got sponsorship from the Dunlop Rubber Company and adopted the Dunlop nickname after moving to Whitby. Winners of the Allan Cup in 1957, the "Dunnies" got to represent Canada at the 1958 Worlds and defeated all opponents, including a pesky Russian squad for their ultimate victory, that after a 14 exhibition game tour of Europe leading up to the tournament. Inspiring keepsake here features crossed hockey sticks and "1958", encircled by those beautiful words "Whitby Dunlops - World Hockey Champions". A maple leaf is at each side while the interior of the size 11 band features a scripted "W. Brabin", as well as "Birks 10K." From the collection of Dunlops' assistant manager Wally Brabin and preserved in excellent condition, it is the first such ring we've ever offered for public sale. A letter of authenticity from the Brabin family will be included with this marvellous treasure.
