Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/22/2010
Wayne Gretzky was a 17-year-old rookie with the WHA's Indianapolis Racers when he scored his first professional goals against - of all teams - the Edmonton Oilers! Offered here is a program with Gretzky listed in the Racers' lineups for their home game against Edmonton at Market Square Arena on October 20, 1978. The Great One put a backhand past soon-to-be-teammate Dave Dryden 6:07 into the second period of his fifth game for his milestone first goal and promptly added his second goal 34 seconds later at 6:41. Racers goalie Eddie Mio, who was sold with Gretzky to Edmonton shortly thereafter, is pictured on the cover. The lineup centerfold has become detached from its staples though it is fully intact. Gretzky's headshot also appears among those of the Racers roster on page 9 and he is also featured in three photos for a racquetball club ad on page 36 that misspelled his name "Gretsky"!
