Jack Laviolette, the man asked by Ambrose OBrien in 1909 to organize a team of French-Canadian speaking hockey players who would be known as Les Canadiens is the subject of this artisan creation.A player-coach during the Canadiens first season, Laviolette was also a top-notch lacrosse player and is depicted here in his National uniform.A thin cardboard cut-out of the head of an older Laviolette was pasted onto a piece of sturdy metal measuring approximately 7 by 15, with everything else painted-on by an unknown artist.Swell tribute to Laviolette, who is one of only three athletes named to both the Hockey Hall of Fame and Canadas Sports Hall of Fame prior to 1970, being elected to the latter for his prowess as a lacrosse player. On the ice, he originally played point (defence), but moved up to forward to form a line with Newsy Lalonde and Didier Pitre and lead the Canadiens to their first of 24 Stanley Cup titles in 1915-16.Jean Baptiste Jack Laviolette, a true Canadian legend!
