Legendary NHL referee Mike Rodden signed this original painting of himself by artist Carleton “Mac” McDiarmid in Kingston, Ontario, on August 22, 1977, mere months before he passed away in the early days of the following year. The Hall of Fame on-ice official has personalized his shaky, though deliberate signature, “To Mac, my best wishes, Michael J. Rodden.” Also a member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, Rodden coached the Hamilton Tigers to consecutive Grey Cup titles in 1928 and 1929. He also excelled as a journalist, including a lengthy stint with the Toronto Globe, where he served as sports editor until 1936, when he left the paper to take on the same position with the Kingston Whig-Standard. This striking portrait of one of the league’s great referees was painted on 15 ½” x 13” professional illustration board. Presented in a grey matte, it is mounted in a stylish 20” x 16” silver-colored metal frame.
