The Jacques Laperriere Auction - Fall 2008
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/21/2008
Ancient wood strap-on ice skates from the 19th century feature exquisitely-curled blade tips. Well before the advent of the internet and computer gaming, it was quite common for the entire family to gather with the neighbors at the local frozen pond or river to skate an afternoon away. These strap-on affairs quickly attached to any shoe or boot and off you sailed across the ice! This pair stretches out to a full fourteen inches in length and has been preserved in excellent condition with some oxidization at the blades. An interesting feature is the notched “picks” at the leading edge of each blade, common on figure skates today.
