Talk about the Holy Grail of vintage hockey cards, this complete set of 40 original 1923-24 William Paterson V145-1 cards includes the extremely rare Bert Corbeau card. One of these hockey cards was included with each original “Paterson Hockey Bar” sold by the Brantford, Ontario-based manufacturer during the 1923-24 NHL season. The back of the bar’s wrapper indicated that the holder of a complete set of 40 cards could send them to the company to obtain a pair of skates. In order to restrict the number of prizes it would be obligated to provide, Paterson made an extremely limited run of one of the 40 cards in the set, the No. 25 card of Toronto St. Patricks defenceman Bert Corbeau. Only a handful of these Corbeau “redeem” cards were actually issued and the card included in this set is one of only two that we are aware of that were not perforated since Paterson would punch the redeemed card before returning a completed set to its original owner along with their “prized” skates. No public references to the value of a Corbeau card have been made because all of the previous transactions involving it have been private sales. This Bert Corbeau card, rated 3-VG by Sportscard Guaranty, is the first one ever offered for auction and public sale. With the inclusion of this incredible Corbeau card, this highly sought-after set features a total of 31 rookie cards, including those of Howie Morenz, King Clancy, Aurele Joliat, Frank Nighbor, Lionel Hitchman, Babe Dye, Cy Denneny and Sylvio Mantha. Each card in this complete set of V145-1 cards has been graded by Sportscard Guaranty and no less than 17 cards in the set are rated 6-EX/NM or higher, including Darragh, Broadbent, Cy Denneny, Mantha, Malone, Stuart, Dye, Jackson, Forbes, Red Green and Prodgers. The Vezina, Odie Cleghorn, Arbour and Adams cards are rated 7-NM, along with a 7.5-NM+ Reise card and an 8-NM-MT John Ross Roach. The No. 34 Randall card in this collection is rated 5.5 EX+ and the Nighbor, Clancy, Geo. Boucher, Morenz, Billy Boucher, Noble, Shorty Green, Spring, Mickey Roach and Fraser cards are 5-EX. The No. 1 Gerard card is a 1.5 fair, the lowest ranked of the cards including Benedict, Joliat, Andrews, Bouchard, Denneny, Helman, Coutu, Burch, Hitchman and Cleghorn that are rated 4 VG/EX or less.
