This official New York Islanders playoff game puck has quite a story to tell. In fact, the details of the story are spelled out by Newsday sportswriter Pat Calabria, whose vintage article describes Bob Bourne’s remarkable end-to-end goal against the New York Rangers in the 1983 playoffs. The original puck is mounted in the bottom left part of a 12” x 16” wooden display plaque along with Calabria’s article, which features a diagram of Bourne’s rush. The smooth-skating left wing gathered the puck beside goalie Billy Smith and circled behind the Islanders’ net before heading up the ice late in the second period of the fifth game of the Patrick Division final on April 21, 1983. Bourne drifted across the ice through the neutral zone and crossed the blue line on the left wing. He then slipped the puck between Rangers defenceman Reijo Ruotsolainen’s legs and avoided Barry Beck’s lunge to put a shot past Ed Mio and just inside the right post. A playoff goal for the ages and a fantastic collectors item that comes along with Bob Bourne’s signed letter of authenticity.
