The Jacques Laperriere Auction - Fall 2008
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/21/2008
Among the six Stanley Cups Jacques Laperriere won during his Hall of Fame playing career, the Montreal Canadiens’ surprising championship in the spring of 1971 is the one that stands out the most. After missing the playoffs the previous season for the first time since 1948 and with Frank Mahovlich added to the lineup as the result of yet another astute move by GM Sam Pollock, the Canadiens upset the Big, Bad Bruins in the first round of the playoffs behind the stellar goaltending of upstart Ken Dryden, who had played only six regular season games to that point. The Habs won a hard-fought six-game series against Minnesota and then beat Chicago in seven games as captain Jean Beliveau capped his outstanding career with his 10th Cup title. This is the original team photo that was presented to Laperriere, who has signed the reverse in blue sharpie. The original 22” x 18” wood frame is scuffed around the edges and the 13” x 11” team photo remains in good condition, with its original beige matte with the players’ names listed at the bottom and “Club de Hockey Canadien 1970-71 Champion de la Coupe Stanley” listed at the top. A fantastic image of one of the most intriguing Stanley Cup champion teams, this great team photo comes along with Jacques Laperriere’s signed letter of authenticity.
