Hockey Memorabilia Auction - Spring 2008

Amazing rare original studio print of a panoramic group photo of the two teams that took part in the Ace Bailey benefit game held at Maple Leaf Gardens on February 14, 1934. The game came about after Bailey suffered a life-threatening head injury the previous December in Boston as the result of a vicious retaliation check by Bruins defenceman Eddie Shore, who was seeing red after a hit by Toronto’s Red Horner. Bailey recovered but the incident ended his career and the NHL’s board of governors decided to stage a special game between the Maple Leafs, including Hainsworth, Clancy, Primeau and Jackson, and a team of the best players from the rest of the league such as Morenz, Gardiner, Shore, Steward and Joliat. This picture was taken after players were presented with their all-star jerseys which culminated with Leafs boss Conn Smythe presenting Bailey with his No. 6 sweater, which was retired by the team. Produced by Toronto’s Alexandra Studio, this 19 ¾” x 7 ½” print is mounted on its original cardboard backing and remains in excellent condition, with slight fading on the right side of the image. An outstanding souvenir of a stirring night from the NHL’s early history.
