Hockey Memorabilia Auction - Spring 2008
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/10/2008
Captivating photographic images here bring forth the story of what most hockey historians consider the sport's first professional league and how it lured some of hockey's biggest stars south of the Canada-U.S. border. Hockey Hall-of-Famers who agreed to big-money contracts and who helped Portage Lake to the International Hockey League championship include Fred "Cyclone" Taylor (lower left corner), team captain Bruce Stuart (top left), goaltender Riley Hern (top right) and right winger Joe Hall (just below Hern), the latter who scored 33 goals in 20 games in 1905-06. The IHL featured one team in Pittsburgh, as well as Michigan teams in Houghton (Portage Lake), Calumet and Sault Ste. Marie, plus the Canadian Soo. A photo of the interior of the Houghton Amphidrome appears in the center of this creation by Houghton's A.W. Buck Studio, the thick sturdy mat measuring 18" by 21-3/4" and also including left winger Fred Lake, point "Grindy" Forrester, cover point Barney Holden and manager John T. Mcnamara. Some water damage/staining to the mat is not what you'll be attracted to, rather the looks of these hockey pioneers, led by the legendary Taylor. Museum-worthy piece will be one of the cornerstones of your pre-NHL team photo collection.
