Hockey Memorabilia Auction - Spring 2008

There were two things Pelle Lindbergh was destined to do, play goalie in the NHL for the Philadelphia Flyers and drive fast cars, particularly his beloved Porsche. Hockey and driving were the passions that fueled Lindbergh’s all-too-brief life, which was cut short by a deadly combination of alcohol, a powerful sports car and a youthful faith in invulnerability and infallibility behind the wheel. Hockey fans will always remember November 10, 1985, the shock of learning that one of the NHL’s great young players had made a foolish mistake, fatally injuring himself when he wrecked his customized Porsche 930 Turbo. “He liked to drive fast and we told him repeatedly to slow down,” Flyers GM Bob Clarke told the Toronto Star in the wake of the accident. “But I suppose when you’re young, strong and full of life you think you’re invulnerable to everything. I guess it’s natural to feel that nothing can ever happen to you.” Lindbergh’s passion for Porsches is evidenced by his 1985 membership card in the Swedish Porsche Club. The light brown card is titled “Porsche Club Sverige” and identifies Pelle Lindbergh as member number 897. This lot also includes Lindbergh’s navy blue “Porsche Club Sverige” cap. Both items were obtained from the Lindbergh family and they come with a signed letter of authenticity.
