Classic style produced by Lefty Wilson, this black-painted affair is similar to masks used by Terry Sawchuk, Roy Edwards, Cesare Maniago, Gilles Meloche and other professionals and considered the most popular style of the 1960s. Sawchuk began wearing one in regular season games in 1962. A Detroit Red Wings trainer, Wilson produced the face protectors using five sheets of fiberglass. This example looks to have its original elastic and black leather straps in great shape and shows good game use with a rather small chip along the bottom edge. Thin yet sturdy and a definite prerequisite to a big-time mask display.
