First Day of Issue here features an image and stamp of Queen Elizabeth, is postmarked “5 X 1964”, and is signed in blue ballpoint by then Prime Minister of Canada, Lester Pearson. The only Canadian ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize (1957), Pearson was leader of Canada from 1963 to 1968 and a passionate hockey fan. He had previously played for the Oxford Canadians while in London and coached the University of Toronto varsity team. The NHL Players Association introduced the Lester B. Pearson Award in 1971, the prestigious award going to the NHL’s outstanding performer as voted by the league’s players. Boston’s Phil Esposito was the first winner in ‘70-71, while Pearson died in December of 1972, rendering his signature a coveted find.
