Although he never witnessed a championship game, Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby and Governor General to Canada, purchased for the price of ten guineas a trophy bearing his name for presentation to the amateur hockey champions of Canada. The Stanley Cup has since become the symbol of professional hockey supremacy. As Lord Stanley died in 1908 his autograph is usually absent from even the most complete of Hall of Fame collections. This neat and tidy "Derby" cut signature is tastefully mounted and matted along with a sepia-tone image of Canada's most famed Earl. The signature is in flowing fountain pen and matches a number of other examples on signed and dated letterheads we have owned and sold in the past. Professionally double-matted on foam core using archival materials to a finished size of 10.75 x 13.5".
