For those of you who have yet to land a coveted signature of the man who donated hockey’s Stanley Cup comes this splendid “cut”, pasted onto a thin piece of cardboard. Writing beneath the fountain pen signature reads “Col. Fred Stanley - Sec. of State for War - (Earl of Derby)”, and helps date the piece to prior to Stanley’s arrival in Canada as Governor General in 1888. Stanley was Britain’s Secretary of State for War from 1878 to 1880. Penned at the bottom of a letter/note and preceded by “Yours truly”, the bold signature here is perfect to match up with a photograph of the man whose hockey legacy will continue to be passed on for generations.
