The son of Lord Frederick Arthur Stanley, Edward Stanley watched his first hockey game, along with his sister and their parents, at the 1889 Montreal Winter Carnival and soon afterwards had his brothers out playing pick-up hockey on the Rideau Hall Rink behind the Governor General's official residence in Ottawa. A member of the Ottawa Rebels which his brother Arthur formed, Edward later (back in England) succeeded his father as Earl of Derby. Interesting to know that he served as honorary president of the Rugby Football League, and donated a cup for the French authorities to use for a knock-out competition, much as his father, Lord Stanley, had done for ice hockey with the Stanley Cup. His "Derby" signature here is on thin cardboard stock measuring 3-1/2" by 4-1/2", with undecipherable words preceding it and "Paris - July 7, 1918" in the lower left corner. Edward passed away in 1948. Fine fountain pen signature of a hockey pioneer. Take notice that the undecipherable words are actually ''Win the War''.
