Fantastic chance here for Mark Messier lovers with this Eastern Conference jersey that one of hockey’s greatest leaders donned during the 1997 NHL All-Star Game in San Jose. The NHL’s second all-time leading point-getter behind his longtime friend Wayne Gretzky, Messier scored once and set up All-Star Game MVP Mark Recchi twice in helping his side outscore the Western Conference stars 11-7. The game also was the first time (and last) Gretzky and Mario Lemieux played together since their 1987 Canada Cup heroics, with the two joining Messier for their final shift, with Coffey and Bourque on defence, making for an all-Hall of Fame “fivesome”. Knit jersey by CCM in size 56 has CCM and Center Ice tags in the collar, “Messier” sewn-on in individual letters (no nameplate) and a New York Rangers shoulder patch. Light game use with however a 6” stick mark on the lower front and a couple of other black marks on the left sleeve. The inside of the fight strap is stamped in red “1997 NHL All-Star Game - San Jose” and has an identification number. It helps to identify this as the jersey Messier wore during the second period (one goal, one assist). A big black marker autograph was penned by Mark on the back of the crest, adding to the piece’s attractiveness. This is part of the set that was given to the NHLPA executive and was indeed obtained from an NHLPA official.
