Remarkable story to go with this Dec. 19, 1963 letter from Conn Smythe to Sally Baun, sent after Bobby was assessed the stiffest fine (‘til that point) in NHL history. The former defenceman relates how, after Chicago’s Reggie Fleming “pitch-forked” Eddie Shack in the stomach, he jumped off the bench and proceeded to drag Fleming and Mikita from the penalty box, starting a major brawl! Smythe writes in part “Your husband has filled me with very fine feeling, so that I can enjoy Christmas. I was so proud to see him prove to everybody that he believed in one for all and all for one”, and “I would appreciate it if you would spend this money on something you were going to buy for the house....as I am not allowed to pay Bobby’s fine.” Great ballpoint Smythe signature concludes the letter, with fold lines and a MLG envelope. Oh yes, the fine?...$2800 which Conn took care of in full in a roundabout way!
