Tantalizing memento was presented to Maple Leaf defenceman Bobby Baun after he helped Toronto’s blue and white to a third consecutive Stanley Cup title in the spring of 1964 and brings forth the story of Baun’s courageous and heroic performance in the Cup finals. After rallying from a 3-2 deficit to beat the Canadiens in seven semi-finals games, the Leafs did the same in the finals against Detroit, Baun the game six hero when he scored the overtime winner while playing on a broken ankle! He had been taken from the ice on a stretcher after blocking a Gordie Howe shot, but fixed up temporarily with some tape and freezing, Bobby returned and beat Terry Sawchuk at 2:43 of OT. On crutches for the next two days, Baun never missed a shift in the series finale, won 4-0 by the Leafs at Maple Leaf Gardens. After the celebration, it was back to the crutches for the next several weeks as the cracked bone healed and into Stanley Cup lore for the next several decades! Fancy 14” in diameter silver-plated tray here has nice scripted engraving that reads “National Hockey League Stanley Cup Winners 1963-64 - Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey Club - Robert Baun” and is in excellent condition with minor surface scratches and cleanable tarnish. Representing some of the happiest of times in Bobby Baun’s 16-year NHL career, the special keepsake will come with his signed letter of authenticity.
