Stirring, captivating and thought-provoking memento here commemorates Bobby Baun’s first of four Stanley Cup triumphs with the Maple Leafs and was presented to the hard-nosed defenceman after Toronto claimed its first of three consecutive Cup titles in 1962. After finishing runner-up to regular season champion Montreal with a 37-22-11 record and 85 points (13 back of the Canadiens), Punch Imlach’s men first took out the Rangers in six semi-final games while defending Cup champion Chicago was doing the same to Montreal for the second straight year. The Cup final was, until game six, a “homer” affair with the Leafs winning games one, two and five at Maple Leaf Gardens, setting up their Cup-clinching 2-1 victory at Chicago Stadium, Dick Duff scoring the Cup-winner at 14:14 of the third period after Bobby Hull and Bob Nevin (assisted by Baun and Mahovlich) had traded earlier third period goals. After joyously skating off with Toronto’s first Cup in 11 years, the Leafs flew back home for what the mayor called “the greatest reception ever tendered by the city”, as a crowd of some 50,000 packed Bay Street and the square around City Hall to acknowledge their hockey heroes. This personal miniature Stanley Cup (just under 13”) features the players’ names engraved in three columns on the barrel of the stunning keepsake. Included are those of Horton, Bower, Keon, Kelly, Olmstead, Stanley, Duff, Pulford, Mahovlich, Shack, Brewer, Baun and Simmons, the latter admirably subbing for the injured Bower in games five and six. The name of the team, its executives and “Stanley Cup Winners 1961-62” are engraved above. Re-silvered to its original splendor, it’s a coveted piece that all old-time Leaf supporters would love to have sitting on their mantle. Obtained directly from Bobby Baun who will sign a letter of authenticity to be included with this tantalizing trophy.
