Fabulous durene knit jersey to get the juices of Maple Leaf and jersey collectors flowing, this tie-neck style beauty was worn by Carl Brewer during Toronto’s successful time in the 1960s. The rugged rearguard was considered one of the best skaters in the league and was known as a man who marched to the beat of his own drum, which ultimately led him to retire at training camp in 1966, unable to cope with Punch Imlach’s dictatorial regime. With a classic embroidered and tackle twill Leafs crest sewn on the front and “2”s stitched to the back and sleeves, the jersey includes a partially frayed and half-detached Doug Laurie Sports tag and a nearby “Dry Clean With Care” tag sewn in the lower/inner left seam. Game use is highlighted by a team repair between the stripes on the left sleeve, three small ones on the front (two near the right armpit), two in the lower blue stripe on the back and another on the rear hem. A few miscellaneous marks, small unrepaired holes, wear to the crest and numbers, and a couple of small stains on the back below the “2” are also to mention. A vintage and faded blue lace still makes its way through the six eyelets. Donned by a free-spirit who was later highly instrumental in bringing down former NHLPA director Alan Eagleson, along with the most dramatic court victory for former players in NHL history, the jersey was autographed on the front by Brewer in blue sharpie, Carl adding “#2”. Number one in the eyes of many former NHLers, the late Carl Brewer will long be remembered for both his on and off-ice contributions to the game, helping make this offering all the more special.
