Stirring original photograph pictures the legendary team of NHL stars which was picked to play in the Ace Bailey Benefit Game following Bailey’s near-fatal injury in December of 1933 at Boston Garden. The incident involved Bruins defenceman Eddie Shore and ended the Toronto player’s career. This is the picture taken by Toronto’s Alexandra Studio shortly after the All-Stars skated out onto Maple Leaf Gardens ice in preparation for their historic game against the Maple Leafs. Shortly afterwards the stars were presented with their all-star garb during moving pre-game ceremonies in which Bailey extended his hand to Shore, showing he had forgiven his former opponent. The silent crowd erupted in approval and then watched the Leafs beat the All-Stars 7-3. The crowd of just over 14,000 helped raise close to $21,000 for Bailey and his family. Scoring for the All-Stars that night were Nels Stewart, Howie Morenz and Frank Finnigan. They’re joined in this 8” x 10” photo by the likes of Shore, Lionel Conacher, Aurele Joliat, Ching Johnson, Charlie Gardiner, Bill Cook, Hooley Smith, Jimmy Ward, Red Dutton, Normie Himes, Herbie Lewis, Larry Aurie, Al Shields and coach Lester Patrick. The captivating photo is in excellent crease-free condition and has been professionally framed. Fans can be seen at the top, just above the MLG clock that indicates 8:25. Truly fascinating and thought-provoking piece of hockey history.
