Fabulous piece of Maple Leafs' history was presented to Toronto bench boss Dick Irvin following the 1937-38 season. The team's name, the year and “J.D. Irvin” are engraved on the back of the medallion-like pendant charm, which also includes “14K Birks”. Measuring just under an inch in diameter, the memento features the raised images of two hockey players on the front, along with a somewhat misleading “National Hockey League Champions.” The Leafs did indeed have a fine season in '37-38, with Gordie Drillon and Syl Apps finishing one-two atop league scorers and helping Toronto to a 24-15-9 record. The Leafs' 57 points won them the Canadian Division regular season championship, however the American Division champion Bruins, with 67 points, bettered Toronto by 10. Drillon was also awarded the Lady Byng Trophy to go along with the Art Ross and the Maple Leafs led the league in goals for. In the playoffs, Toronto swept Boston in three straight semi-final games but bowed out to the Black Hawks in the finals, Chicago scoring a three-games-to-one victory. Golden keepsake here has survived in difficult-to-hope-for-nicer condition and was presented to the first Leafs' coach to guide his team to a Stanley Cup.
