Three quick hockey history lessons accompany this fantastic artwork by Carleton McDiarmid and done in the 1980s for a forever-popular Hall of Fame card and postcard set. Painted with watercolors on 15" by 20" illustration boards, the trio here features men who made their mark in Montreal hockey circles. Mike Grant is depicted in his maroon uniform of the Montreal Victorias, a team he first captained to the Stanley Cup title in 1895. Playing “point”, Grant was the Vics’ perennial leader and helped the team to four Cup triumphs. Gordon Roberts meanwhile was a left winger and scoring star who played six seasons (1910-16) for the Montreal Wanderers while getting his medical degree from McGill University. He scored at a better-than-goal-a-game clip and then, after going west to practice medicine, rifled a PCHA record 43 goals in 23 games with the Vancouver Millionaires in 1916-17. Finally, Hall of Fame builder William Northey was president of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association during some of the club’s greatest years and is depicted with the AAA’s winged wheel logo. Northey also helped supervise the construction of the original Montreal Forum and for many years was the building’s managing director. Wonderful images of fine contributors to hockey history.
