Known among hockey historians as the first winners of the Stanley Cup, the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association also included teams and individuals who competed in numerous different sports, with evidence in this intriguing lot. A pin features the association's winged wheel logo, a football and the words "Montreal Football Club" on the front, while "Hemsley's" and "Sterling" are stamped on the back. The Montreal Football Club resigned from the Quebec Rugby Football Union in 1907 and together with the Toronto Argonauts, Hamilton Tigers and Ottawa, formed the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union, or the "Big Four" as the league was called. In that year, the Montreal Football club's senior and junior team both won their provincial and Dominion championships, with this pin possibly issued for one of those titles. Also present here are four sterling silver spoons featuring the association's logo and "MAAA" initials, with three presented to a bowling star by the name of G.A. Forbes. The name, "Bowling" and various dates in 1901, 1902 and 1903 are engraved on the upper backs. Completing the lot is a postcard dated "1906" and showing MAAA members on the club's sprawling skating rink at the Westmount Grounds. The rink, other than membership fees, was the most important source of income with masquerade carnivals, band nights, moonlight skating, waltzing and figure skating attracting the masses. Crease-free postcard is unused and a fine complement to the thought-provoking pin and spoons.
