Forward Gus Marker, after breaking into the big leagues with Detroit in 1932, became an NHL regular with the Maroons, arriving at the Montreal Forum in 1934 and contributing to the team’s Stanley Cup championship in his first of four seasons as a Maroon. After eliminating defending Cup champion Chicago and then the Rangers in two-game-total-goal series, the Maroons swept Toronto in the best-of-five final as goalie Alex Connell was spectacular in allowing just four goals. Baldy Northcott had the distinction of scoring the Cup-winner in Montreal’s 4-1 clinching victory on Forum ice, while Marker added a third period insurance goal. The Maroons had set a record by going seven playoff games without a loss and team members were rewarded with fabulous gold mementos like this. The pendant is just under one-inch in diameter and like its accompanying 20” chain is in 14-karat gold. “Stanley Cup Winners” is beneath the hockey scene on the front, while classy scripted engraving on the back reads “Montreal Maroons - A. Marker - 1934-35.” Stamped “14K” and “Birks”, the keepsake has survived in difficult-to-expect-nicer condition. Representing the highlight of August “Gus” Marker’s career, it’s a tantalizing piece from a franchise that disappeared just three years after being on top of the hockey world.
