Highly intriguing reading here surrounds the 1947 tug-of-war over the rights to teenager Jacques Plante. A December 11th letter signed by Frank Selke advises NHL president Clarence Campbell that Plante “has returned to the Canadien Jr. Hockey Club as per the ruling of the JAHA and we claim full rights to his services.” A December 13th document (also signed by Selke) places Plante on the Goalkeepers’ Reserve List of the Dallas (USHL) Hockey Club. Most intriguing is a three-page letter Selke sent to Campbell on Dec. 15th, explaining the Plante saga and how he had begged to tryout for the Junior Canadiens, earned a spot, then got a better offer in Quebec City and wanted out of Montreal stating it was too big with too many English people. Then deluged with threatening phone calls from Quebec, Selke lost his temper and released Plante, “I have had my fill of Jacques Plante!” Finally, a letter signed by Rangers GM Frank Boucher questions why New York wasn’t able to put Plante on their negotiation list on Dec. 3rd. Amazing stuff for Plante aficionados!
