After backstopping the Montreal Canadiens to five Stanley Cup championships, winning the Vezina Trophy six times and being named the NHL’s MVP in 1961-62, Jacques Plante was dealt to the New York Rangers in a blockbuster deal during the summer of 1963. Donnie Marshall and Phil Goyette also headed to Broadway, with the Canadiens receiving Gump Worsley, Dave Balon, Leon Rochefort and one Len Ronson in return. This is the contract Plante agreed to with the Rangers, the signing taking place on July 29th. It called for a salary of $22,000 and included bonus clauses based on the Rangers’ performance. The goalkeeper was to get $500 if the blueshirts made the playoffs, an additional $500 if they finished in third place or better, $500 more if they made it to the Stanley Cup finals and another $500 if they won hockey’s top honor. With a far from powerhouse squad in front of him, Plante wasn’t able to pick up any bonus money, New York ending ’63-64 in fifth place, 17 points out of a playoff spot. The one-page document called for the same terms and conditions to prevail during the ’64-65 campaign. Signed on the front in customary fashion by league president Clarence Campbell, the contract features the perfect ballpoint signatures of Plante and Ranger GM Murray Patrick on the back. Folded once and tear-free, it’ll be an important addition to a Plante/Hall of Fame contract collection.
