Never in history had the sport of hockey mourned the loss of one of its stars as when the beloved Howie Morenz died at age 34 in March of 1937. A framed eulogy read by Frank Ryan at Boston Garden reads in part “For years no visiting player was more feared by the Bruins, no player more respected and admired by the Boston fans. His speed as a skater, his brilliance as a stickhandler, his manliness and sportsmanship as a competitor, forever will endear to all of us the memory of Howie Morenz.” Other accolades, in French, surround a newspaper photo of Howie, while two other clippings include the teams which took part in the Morenz memorial game. A vintage second generation photo of Morenz in his Black Hawks uniform and a gorgeous colorized 1938-39 Canadiens team photo from “La Presse” picturing many of the teammates Morenz left behind complete the stirring collection.
