Captivating and intriguing is this vintage photograph that captures three of hockey’s brightest stars of the 1930s and who would later all be elected to the Hall of Fame. An arm patch on the jersey of Montreal Canadiens legend Howie Morenz references the Habs’ back-to-back Stanley Cup titles in ’29-30 and ’30-31 and helps date the photo, which looks to have been taken at the Forum, the box seats in the background behind the end of the players’ bench. The presence of young Toronto star right winger Charlie Conacher alongside Montreal Maroon Hooley Smith leaves some unanswered questions. Wearing a plain practice jersey, Conacher appears to also be wearing the same Canadiens-type socks as Morenz. The photographer is not identified but the crystal clear image gets the beholder gazing for long periods at the uniforms, gloves, sticks and skates, not to mention the looks on the three men’s faces! Measuring just under 8” by 10”, the glossy (EX) photo comes to us from Howie Morenz Jr., with his signed LOA to be included.
