Stunning sculpture of a people’s hero pays tribute to hockey icon Maurice Richard and was produced in limited quantities in 1999, two years after a bronze monument of the Rocket had been unveiled by the Maurice Richard Foundation. A letter from foundation president Serge Savard reveals that this series of sculptures was a fundraising initiative, with money going to support youngsters, more specifically Quebec’s elite in sports on ice. A certificate of authenticity signed by Richard and Savard reveals that this piece is number “129/999.” On a diamond-shaped granite base measuring approximately 7” by 16” sits a bronze piece of “ice” that includes the legend’s engraved facsimile autograph, along with “ne jamais abandonner” and the translated “never give up”. The look on the face of the founder of the NHL 500-goal club is of course a serious one as he carries the puck with a CCM stick, his number 9 sweater on his back. With a total height of just over 9”, the exquisite piece is one that can be displayed at various angles, all offering a superb image of the incomparable Rocket.
