More interesting reading here with the official NHL contract Henri Richard signed with the Canadiens after being the Game 7 hero of the previous Stanley Cup finals in Chicago. Montreal hockey supporters of a certain age will remember how the fiery Richard criticized coach Al MacNeil, before scoring the tying and winning goals in the Habs’ 3-2 come-from-behind win, giving Montreal its fifth Cup title in seven years. This deal is actually for the ’71-72 and ’72-73 seasons and called for a salary of $75,000. Bonus clauses include “$2000 if Canadiens are lowest scored against team in league” and “$1000 if he is plus-20 or better per league records in regular season”, with an additional $1000 for a plus-30 or better. Henri was a plus-34 in ’72-73 and Ken Dryden and the Habs indeed won the Vezina Trophy for fewest goals allowed. Henri Richard’s blue ballpoint signature joins that of club president David Molson on the back of this one-page document, with league president Clarence Campbell’s on the front. Signed the 12th of August, 1971, the contract is in great shape and has been in the possession of Henri Richard until now. The legend who will go down in history as the player with the most Stanley Cup championships to his credit will sign a letter of authenticity that will be included.
