A highly important contributor to the Montreal Canadiens’ so-called “quiet dynasty” of the 1960s which saw the Habs claim Lord Stanley’s coveted trophy four times in five years, Henri Richard agreed to terms of this contract prior to the ’67-68 season, one that turned out to be a championship year. Official NHL Standard Player’s Contract reveals that Henri made $35,000, along with some nice bonus money. Although he was limited to 54 games and just 28 points because of injury and thus wasn’t able to pick up $100 for every point over sixty, as offered in the bonus clause section, the Canadiens’ first place finish, along with their playoff first round, second round and Stanley Cup wins each was good for $1000, meaning four “grand” in bonus money. Henri was there come playoff time, potting four goals and as many assists as Montreal swept the Bruins, took out Chicago in five and then swept St. Louis. NHL president Clarence Campbell signed the front of the contract in his customary fashion, while Richard and Canadiens’ president David Molson nicely penned their names to the back. A clause in the deal has the club agreeing to offer to Henri a similar contract (except for the salary) prior to the ’68-69 season. One-page document is in excellent condition with one fold line and comes to us directly from one of the Canadiens’ immortals. Mr. Richard’s signed LOA will be included.
