Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction - October 2007
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/23/2007
Fantastic vintage minor league offering from the tradition-rich
Hershey Bears franchise comes to us from Mark Marquess himself, a
right winger who toiled five seasons for the Bears
(’46-’51) and whose pro career included 27 games with the Boston
Bruins in ’46-47. An autographed photo of Marquess wearing a similar
sweater is dated 1948-49, with Mark recalling in a handwritten letter
that the jersey here was the style worn “on the road”. A size 44 tag
is in the lower inner hem, with “Hershey” and the number “10”s on the
front and back sewn-on in nice white tackle twill. Heavy wool
sweater exhibits nice moderate game use with marks, burns and scrapes
throughout. Some blood staining in the “0” on front is joined by
quarter and dime-size holes above the first “H” in Hershey, with a
dozen-or-so holes on the sleeves, most of them on the right, where a
couple were mended by the team trainer. Marquess was one of seven 20-
goal scorers for the Bears in ’48-49 (the others included Phil
Maloney and Herbie Cain), then helped Hershey to the Calder Cup
finals with 11 playoff points in as many games. Super sweater for a
big-time vintage minor league display.
