Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction - March 2007
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/27/2007
Well folks, we have had the honor and the pleasure to offer some incredible hockey jerseys, memorabilia and collectibles in the last 10-plus years but this piece, in our opinion, tops them all! We will of course rave about it but first, let’s cut to the chase; Bobby Orr WORE THIS JERSEY WHILE DRINKING FROM THE STANLEY CUP on May 11th, 1972 at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Bobby had earlier scored his second Stanley Cup-winning goal in three years WHILE WEARING THIS JERSEY, as the Bruins beat the Rangers 3-0 to take the Cup finals in six games. Our beyond-any-doubt photo match involves marks on the “4” of the right sleeve and two team repairs a little lower down that show up in a photo of the icon with his lips on the bowl of Lord Stanley’s coveted, coveted trophy. We have, and we suspect you feel the same way, a hard time imagining things getting any better than this! Classic stretchy Wilson knit Bruins predominantly black road jersey had the size added to the company tag in the neck but is no longer decipherable. Looks like it was a double-garter style fight strap that was cut out of the tail. We’re sure you’d like to hear about the numerous team repairs, so here goes. There are 11 on the front; mostly pea and dime-size affairs, along with a couple of wide one- inch jobs. A twelfth, measuring an inch by two inches repaired a rip at the base of the six eyelets. Three repairs are on the left sleeve and three more on the right, including a big inch by three-inch stitch job in the upper black section of the cuff, nearby where red board paint can be spotted in the gold stripe. A dime-size repair on the upper back and a small one along the rear hem round out the trainer’s work. Other notables are a drop of blood in the white of the Bruins tackle twill crest (at the lower left tip of the “B”), pilling/wear at the cuffs, mainly the left, and significant interior pilling in the arms, shoulders and number regions. Worn throughout Boston’s Stanley Cup playoff march by hockey’s greatest defenceman, who was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy for the second time in three years as playoff MVP, the jersey has been in a private collection for decades and is being offered to the hobby for the first time. We don’t believe you need any further information but will be happy to discuss this truly chance of a lifetime with serious bidders. A letter of authenticity will be included with this mind-boggling, captivating treasure which is subject to a silent reserve.
